A traditional garden design always works well for a traditional or period property. A relaxed cottage garden design theme. Works well with a smaller period property. Combine traditional materials, such as sandstone paving. With a relaxed planting scheme. Add low-maintenance planting. Miscanthus grasses, hebes, Guara and rudbeckia.
For a larger garden design. Add a formal traditional garden design. Think of a stately home garden design. But on a smaller scale and smaller budget. Formal lines and an element of symmetry is important. Traditional landscaping materials work well. For paths and paving select a natural sandstone paving such as Kandla grey. Sandstone is a natural stone that ages well. Getting better with age! Slate is rich in colour and lush in texture. And works well front of the house.

Design Ideas ∙ Urban Zen Garden Design
Relaxed Design ∙ an urban zen garden has a relaxed feel. It’s kind of rambling. But slightly more restrained than a cottage garden design. Materials are important, especially those with an aged or natural feel. Planting is lush. With the emphasis on an interest in plant shapes and foliage. The colour pallets are restricted to a few key colours. Vibrant colours such as reds, blues, pinks and yellows.
Materials set the tone for your garden design. Quality materials always come at a price. They will look more natural in your garden design. Than man-made materials, such are concrete pavers.
Paving ∙ Urban Zen Garden Design ∙ Where possible. Always opt for a natural stone. Sandstone natural paving works well in most garden settings. It ages well. It’s easy to clean. And looks great laid in contemporary single sized patterns. 600 x 600mm or the larger 600 x 900mm. Laid in an offset stretcher bond pattern.
Slate, Granite or porcelain Paving ∙ Slate looks great. It’s luxurious in colour and has a quality feel. It is one of the more expensive stones. It can be used for smaller patios or fronts of house. Always make sure your slate is exterior grade. External tiles are slightly thicker. And are more frost resistant? Then the thinner interior tiles!
Granite ∙ is extremely hard-wearing. And easy to clean. It can be slightly slippery. Always opt for a slightly textured stone. Shiny stones can be extremely slippery in frosty or wet conditions.
Porcelain Paving ∙ is the new kid on the block. It’s a man-made material. And can be produced in a variety of colours and textures. Some are natural in appearance. Others are not so natural. It’s slightly harder to lay than concrete or natural stone paving. It’s harder to cut. Make sure you a hard a good quality porcelain blade handy. And a wet saw will help. It’s pretty impervious to liquids. This means it’s extremely stain resistant. Spill some oil on the surface. Simply wipe it off with a cloth. The downside is that your mortar bed doesn’t stick well to the underside of the porcelain slabs. You need to apply a bridge bond to the underside of the slab. SBR is a common one. And they are other dedicated bridge bonds.
Decking ∙ Works well in your urban zen design. Decking looks natural. Choose from softwood or hardwood decking. Softwood decking is great value for money. It’s available in a ridge or smooth boards. Smooth boards look great. Gives you that boardwalk feel to your urban zen garden design. Lighting can be added to complete the look. Extending the party into the night.
Great planting will complete your design. Softening your hard landscape materials. Shape and foliage are important to your garden design. Colour will add interest and contrast to your garden design.
For maximum impact always plant in groups. For some reason. Odd numbers always look better than even. Flowers should be planted in swathes. Creating drifts of colours in your garden design. Try to avoid the ‘have one of each approach. And its better to have a few full lush beds. Than a sparse garden. Invest in a few key plants. Creating interest and key focal points for your planting. Add some ‘fillers’ adding contrast, shape and structure. And finish the planting scheme with a splash of colour.
Key Plants ∙ These are generally the most expensive plants in your planting scheme. They are usually planted as lone specimens. Or in small groups.
Specimen Key Plants ∙ Magnolia, Bay Trees, Tree Ferns, Palms, Topiary, half standards and pleached trees.
Fillers ∙ pittosporum, choisya, euonymus, ferns, phormiums, aucuba, fatsia, miscanthus grass and photinia.
Colour ∙ Rudbeckia, verbena, echinacea, crocosmia, agapanthus, alliums, irises and heleniums.
Artificial grass not only looks great. Its low maintenance. It can be used 365 days a year. It great for families with kid or pets.
slopes can be hard or even dangerous to cut with a lawn mower. In an ideal world. You would level your garden to achieve that flat lawn. However, for some gardens. This may be impractical or even impossible. Due to the sheer amount of soil that needed to be moved. It is possible to terrace such a garden. Again this can be an expensive option. Why not install artificial turf. Dry Gardens ∙ Water Logged Gardens ∙ Maybe your garden is dry or water logger. Slopes can be dry at the top. And waterlogged at the bottom. Especially if the ground is full of clay. Which can be waterlogged in the winter. And bone dry in the summer months. Artificially grass could be the answer. Mossy Lawns ∙ Trying to achieve the perfect lawn can be an uphill struggle. The mowing. The weeding. The feeding. Mossy can be a problem. It’s labour intensive to rake it out. Reseed the lawn and water it. And in many cases. This has to be repeated annually. It’s possible to aerate the ground and apply lawn sand. However, if your ground is full of clay and shady. It’s likely the moss with reappear. Why not Install artificial grass! Pet and kids can really give your lawn a workout. And in extreme casing real damage. Resulting in a messy muddy lawn Artificial grass is hard-wearing. And if installed properly. Will drain well. And will be usable 365 days of the year!
