• • If the ground is ‘bone dry’.  Give the lawn, a good soak with the hose, the day before.  This will make the job, considerably easier.

• • Excavate to a depth to around 60-80mm.  Remove any excess soil.  Distribute any good soil around the garden.  And skip the remainder.

Next add a well-constructed perimeter.  The perimeter will contain the crushed concrete. Next add a layer of crushed concrete, to a depth of between 40-60mm.  Rake to a good level.  Spray with water from a hose.  Compact using a wacker plate.  Repeat the process.  Crouch down and have a good look at the levels.  The flatter the surface, the flatter the artificial grass will be. If you are unsure.  Check with a length of timber, a brick line, or a long spirit level.

Next add a layer of grano dust and rake level.  Compact with the wacker plate.  Repeat the process if needed.  Once you are happy with the levels. You are ready to lay the artificial turf.

Next add a breathable weed membrane. This will prevent weed growth. You can add the membrane before the crush concrete and grano dust. It’s a matter of preference.

Unroll the artificial grass and carefully lift into position.  Try not to disturb any of the crushed concrete or grano dust. Stretch the artificial grass tight, removing any creases or ridges.  You may need more than one roll of artificial grass, creating a joint.  If so, lift the next piece of grass into position.  Butting the edges together. It’s a good idea to slightly offset the stitching on the edges, on each piece of artificial grass. Creating a more invisible joint.

Joining ⋅ edges ⋅ perimeter

The next process is to join the edges together.   Use a high strength, edging tape.   Some of this tape is pre-glued.  Others aren’t.  If not, add some glue down the seam, using a mastic gun.  For extra strength, the artificial grass can be nailed into place.

Next glue the artificial grass onto the perimeter.  Again, using glue and the mastic gun. If possible, nail the artificial grass to the perimeter.

Some artificial grass needs infill, others don’t.  The sand like product, is brushed into the artificial grasses pile.  Artificial grass infill helps the blades stand upright.  Certain types of artificial grass infill will absorb unpleasant odours from pet urine.

It’s sometimes easier to remove the lawn and try to reduce the clay content.  Introducing some better-quality topsoil.
